Crash during new character creation

I've played this game for ages and have naturally created many characters over time. However, I'm now experiencing a crash (no error message) as soon as I select a class (e.g. Fighter) in the character creation process. I experimented with clearing the cache and temp folders, to no effect.

I can still access all my saved games. I don't have any mods installed. I do have ToB installed, and the crash happens regardless of whether the new character is for SoA or ToB.

I know this game likes to crash a lot, but I've never encountered this particular bug and I'm not sure how to get around it. Any thoughts?
